I think what the sole purpose of the reservation for the SCs, STs n in the mean time OBCs is to make them aware of what is now available to them. Awareness is important. Just to answer the questions or the answers as I thought-- came up with more questions
- How many lower income groups (mainly villages or small town) aspire their child to be an IITian or IIMian for the sake of it? Actually tell me how many of these parents atleast know about that these premium education institutes exist for sake of it. How can they make them go for it? For them reservation in these means Nothing more than “sort of nothing”.
- How many students have failed to take admission in these premium institutes due to financial problems? Well guess what it was never the problem of money. And everybody knows one cashes in much more than what you have invested.
Giving reservation on the basis of caste at least generate awareness among those groups that “falna ka ladka wahaan padh rha hai”, this group at least gets ready to accept the change for their children. Look beyond what they ever thought.
Talking of my example after just giving my 10th boards, I came to know about these terms IITs, JEE, AIEEE, etc (forget MBA, IIMs or CAT or any other). (I knew engineering bcoz in childhood I thought its really cool to an engineer … ain’t I :P). I was the first in my paternal family(My father is 6 brothers) to ever do Engineering. Yes I was lucky in that respect to that my father from very early stressed on my education (no matter what). Now since I am well aware of these things, and how to go with them, my uncles, cousins find me as the one who knows how to take these on and advise on it. My sister who has just given her 10th board examination is worried about whether she should go for engineering or MBA, knowing about both of them. Silly girl tells me u were lucky -no such things to think of.
And if this is the case with me who hails from small town Giridih from a middle class well to do family, Think of the other backward regions and other class of society.
But after saying these all, I think Reservation just should be a Temporary settlement.
